Lesson 9
The Discipline of Sabbath: Embracing Rest and Delight in God
Sabbath keeping is a spiritual discipline rooted in God’s command to set aside one day each week for rest, renewal, and worship. While it has often been associated with restrictions, the true purpose of Sabbath is not burdensome but life-giving—a gift from God. The practice invites us to stop our regular work, rest from anxieties and pressures, delight in God’s blessings, and contemplate His presence. The two versions of the commandment (Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5) focus on creation and covenant, reminding us that God is at the center of life—not us. Sabbath offers a “snow day” every week—a chance to pause, set aside our responsibilities, and fully enjoy God. By embracing this rhythm, we are refreshed, realigned with God’s purpose, and reminded of His love and grace.
