Lesson 7
The Discipline of Keeping the Daily Hours: Establishing a Rhythm with God
The discipline of keeping the daily hours, or the “Daily Office,” involves intentionally pausing throughout the day to focus on God and nurture the soul. This ancient practice, rooted in monastic tradition and as far back as the early church in Acts 3, sets a rhythm for spiritual growth. While monks observed this practice up to eight times daily, today we can create our own rhythm—perhaps pausing four times a day: morning, noon, afternoon, and evening. Even brief moments of silence, prayer, or Scripture reading throughout the day offer opportunities to step away from life’s busyness and reconnect with God. Using reminders, like smartphone alarms, can help us make space for these mini-retreats, keeping us mindful of God’s presence. This regular rhythm not only nurtures the soul but also reminds us of God’s love, sovereignty, and blessings, allowing us to enjoy Him more fully.
